Crime

This past Friday, as just about everyone knows by now, my laptop was stolen out of my car. To record it and related information for posterity, here it is. The following is the record of the event that I sent to the insurance company (SafeWare).

Around 7:30pm on the night of Thursday, May 29th, 2003, I parked my car in the parking lot just outside my apartment. I was headed elsewhere, and intended to be right back out, and so didn't lock my car when I went into my apartment. While I was inside, I got sidetracked, and didn't come back out to my car until approximately two hours later, arms full of things to take to my girlfriend's apartment. When I opened the rear car door to put them in there, I noticed that my black backpack was missing. I put the stuff in the car, and went back into my apartment to quickly search it and make sure I hadn't taken my backpack in with me. I hadn't. I went back outside to examine the car to see if anything else was missing. I noticed that the front door of the car was not closed all the way, and the change from the coin-holder in the front of the car was missing. Upon further examination, nothing else in the car was missing. I then called the police, and waited for them to come.

The backpack contained my laptop, two books, my reading glasses (in a soft, green glasses case), a pad of checks, eye drops, and various computer cables. The two books were The Histories, by Herodotus (a small, well-worn paperback), and the Proceedings of the Symposium on Architectural Support for Operating Systems and Programming Languages (ASPLOS), published by the ACM. The computer cables included the power supply for the laptop, a blue ethernet cord about ten feet long, a small video adapter cable, a telephone cable, and a short Firewire cable. The laptop was a 14.1 inch Apple iBook, with an 800 MHz processor, 640MB of RAM, a 30GB hard drive, and an Airport wireless ethernet card.

A bit later, I found a Crime Alert in my FOG mailbox. It gives some interesting information about other events at the time:

Burglary Reported to O'Hara Grace Apartment

Notre Dame Security/Police (NDSP) is investigating a burglary in the O'Hara Grace Apartments. At about 12:37am on Friday, May 30, 2003 a student reported leaving his apartment for a short time and returning to find that a man entered the apartment. The student notified NDSP and provided a description of the suspect. A person fitting the description was located by NDSP near the Fisher O'Hara Grace (FOG) Community Center and fled on foot from police officers. Police chased the suspect south of Bulla Road through the woods. St. Joseph County and South Bend Police K-9 units assisted NDSP but were unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a male, black, about 6'2" tall, approximately 200 pounds, with short brown hair, light beard, and pock marks on face. The suspect was reported to be wearing a royal blue long sleeve jacket and blue jeans. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact NDSP at 631-5555.

A few hours earlier on Thursday evening a student reported the theft of property from an unlocked motor vehicle parked outside an apartment in the FOG complex.

Remember to keep vehicles, apartment doors and windows locked—even if you will be away for just a moment. Please be watchful and immediately report suspicious activity to NDSP by dialing 9-1-1 from any campus telephone or emergency call box.
